Perfect Summer Sipping

There’s something about the Summer months which makes us long for long, tall, exotic cocktails. Maybe we’ve seen too many movies or succumbed to too many advertising campaigns. After all, a nice, cool beer would do the trick on any other hot day. But cocktails do more than just quench our thirst. Whether we’re lying by the pool or sitting in the outside area of one of our favourite bars, we sometimes get the feeling that something is missing and a cocktail is the only thing that can fill that gap. There are some cocktails which fill our need more than others during the Summer, however, and here are a few which more often than not, hit the spot.

The Old Fashioned. The ingredients are dependent upon where you are drinking it and who is serving as they vary somewhat. Typically, however, you can expect a combination of whiskey, Angostura and syrup with an orange twist. Sometimes, rather than ice cubes, it is poured over an ice glacier large enough to fill the glass. This is preferable to those who take their time to savour their cocktail as it stays chilled for longer.

The Ginlet. One of the most refreshing cocktails and appropriate for the Summer months. Its ingredients are gin and Rose’s lime juice with a lime wedge. Gin is often used instead of vodka which infuriates some traditionalists. However, each variety is strong and possesses the ability to quench your thirst and can make you forget about his the heat that was overwhelming you. At least for a few minutes.

Sangria. A fabulous mix of wine and something with a little more kick. Although, fundamentally, it is nothing more than a traditional Spanish punch, it can taste different depending upon where you drink it as bartenders often like to be creative with this drink.

The Southside. Take the ingredients of a mojito but use rum instead of gin and you have a Southside. Most city centre bars will serve this drink or you could even make this citrusy drink at home if you ave spare mint in your garden. The perfect cocktail to while away the hours by the pool.
