Scuba Diving and Snorkeling Resource Centre

My trip to Belize where I visited Placencia, Xunanunich, and Ranguana Caye. Accommodations: We stayed at a cute beach bungalow called Barnacle Bill’s which is located on Maya Beach just 10 min north of Placencia. This was the highlight of our trip as there are only 2 bungalows total so the beachfront is all yours! Activities: + Cockscomb Basin/Jaguar Preserve – where we hiked through the jungle and learned about the cool plant whose leaves close up when you touch them! We also swam in the refreshing waterfalls, and floated down the river in a tube + Xunantunich Mayan Ruins – hike to the top of the ruins and you can see Guatemala! + Snorkeling at Ranguana Caye – where we swam with nurse sharks and sting rays + Monkey River – where we searched for manatees in the lagoon

Now that you are interested in Scuba Diving here are some important pointers that will serve to guide you as you embark on this thrilling underwater adventure.  Scuba is an acronym which stands for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus which is a system that allows divers to breathe from an air tank/scuba cylinder on their back and exhale into the water.  This affords you the amazing opportunity to explore the underwater life which simply put is an out of this world experience

You do not need to be a professional swimmer so as to enjoy the pleasures of Scuba Diving but you should be able to swim/snorkel comfortably in water.  As you will discover with time once in the water it is advisable not to swim a lot so as to reduce the rate of using up of the air in the tank.  You also need to be in good health with most courses requiring that you fill out a medical form to attest to your state of health.

It is advisable that you get certified.  You can either take a certification course or a resort course.  The certification course can be obtained from one of the sport’s major organizations, PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) or NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors).  The course is 20 hours and costs about $800, which includes the cost of renting the diving gear for the duration of the course as well as making the required dives, and bears the advantage that the certification is valid for life.

The course has a classroom component where the theory is taught like what to do when you are low on air or what to do when your mask is filled with water.

One does not move to diving directly but rather experiments with snorkeling which is also known as skin diving.  This allows one to get used to the basic diving gear like the mask, snorkel and fins and gives one an idea of how it is underwater.  This is usually done in a swimming pool setting under the guidance and strict surveillance of the instructors.  One then tries out the diving and eventually gets to dive in the open water.  One can choose to advance their training as they get more experienced and desire to be more adventurous.

The resort course is where you can get to dive to a maximum depth of 33 feet but only when accompanied by an instructor.  This has the unique advantage of allowing you to try it out first and determine if you like it before investing the time and money required for the certification course.

Diving gear is generally divided into two categories; required and gadget.  The required are things like the mask, fins, snorkel, buoyancy compensator, regulator, weights and a dive computer.  These are necessary for any dive and if you are considering regular diving it is advisable to get your own mask and fins as a tight fit for these is important.  The gadget gear comprises those things that are needed for a particular kind of diving for instance cameras and lighting for underwater photography.

All that said I must state that the most basic fact about Scuba Diving is that it is a phenomenal experience worth trying and, inevitably, worth engaging in with friends and other Scuba Diving lovers.

PADI Seal Team is for young divers who are looking for action-packed fun in a pool by doing exciting scuba AquaMissions. Have you ever wondered what it’s like to dive with flashlights, take digital pictures underwater or float effortlessly like an astronaut? These are AquaMissions that introduce you to wreck, navigation, buoyancy, underwater photography, environmental awareness and more. Here’s your chance to do some cool stuff in the pool, meet friends and share in the adventure of the underwater world.

Those who have been on a cruise to the Caribbean or Catalina know that it is the perfect place for diving as the water there is so blue and clear. You would definitely want to try scuba diving there, even if you are not into it. In order to sign up for that, though, you have to be in a good physical shape, be an experienced swimmer, and be certified. Only if you are a qualified scuba diver would the cruise diving team let you dive – after all, danger is everywhere, including underwater.

Before you embark on that extreme experience, there are facts you need to know. Following are a few Dos and Don’ts related to scuba diving.

•    Scuba Diving Dos:

1)    The two most important requirements are the good physical shape and certification. If you lack any of those, do not risk your life.

2)    The things you need to take: mask, diving fins, weight belt, regulator and octopus, compass, dive light with backup, dive knife, air tank and backup, dive flag, spare mouthpiece, first aid kit, flare gun (do not forget the flares!).

3)    It is safer and more pleasant if you have a diving partner. Do not forget to constantly keep visual contact, and try not to kick out their mouthpiece.

4)    A third person is a must. They stay on the boat, have a mobile phone, and help when getting out of the water.

5)    If you want to bring back a souvenir, take an underwater camera with you together with underwater light and backup.

•    Scuba Diving Don’ts:

1)    Do not drink and then dive. Think about your own safety and the safety of your partner.

2)    Do not forget to tell someone where you are and when you will go back.

3)    Do not eat too much before diving; before diving wait for at least two hours after eating. Otherwise, you might get cramps or troubled breathing.

These are only some of the useful tips related to scuba diving you need to take into consideration. Always inform yourself before diving.

•    The only documentation of the use of inflated goatskins used as breathing devices is carvings depicting Assyrian soldiers crossing rivers with the help of the devices.

•    Guy Gilpatrick invented the waterproof goggles in the 1930s, France. Their function was to keep the salt water out of the eyes at the surface.

•    The L. A. Co. Dept. of Parks and Recreation, USA, offered the first scuba diving certification course. The wetsuit was introduced to the public in 1956.
